Classroom Environment

 KTSE

This has appeared several times in this syllabus. It is that important, you will get tired sometimes, and I will remind you of it frequently

Inclusive Participation

Theory draws from all manner of places, but it is also far-too-frequently frequently taught from a western, white, colonial perspective. We will, together, attempt to break through that, and make space for marginalized theorists, oppressed philosophers, and contemporary designers.

Take Space, Make Space

Take Space if you haven’t spoken for a while
Make Space if you have said a lot

Feedback and Open Communication

Kindly challenge each other, critique each others understanding of the readings, draw from your lives and those of your classmates, give me feedback, tell me I’m wrong.

A Living Syllabus, A Living Classroom

We will spend part of the first class session creating an expanded set of classroom environment rules to abide by. We can edit, remove, and add as the semester continues.

Missed Classes

You are adults and attendance is not part of your final grade. However, consistent attendance is necessary to score well in your participation grade. So show up, KTSE, but look after yourself. If you need to miss a class, let me know in advance. If you miss a class and couldn’t let me know, please notify me
as soon as you can. Multiple absences will prompt a follow up conversation about participation, wellness, and your place in this course.

Academic Accommodations

Accommodations are available for many students, please see the resources at the tail end of this syllabus for more information. We are here to support you.

Wellness Statement

Take care of yourself.  Do your best to maintain a healthy lifestyle this semester by eating well, exercising, avoiding drugs and alcohol, getting enough sleep and taking some time to relax. This will help you achieve your goals and cope with stress. All of us benefit from support during times of struggle. There are many helpful resources available on campus and an important part of the college experience is learning how to ask for help. Asking for support sooner rather than later is almost always helpful.

Shop Safety

You will have extensive training as to how the tools and machines function. Do not use tools, machinery, equipment, or new materials without proper instruction and/or supervision.  Equipment and materials may be dangerous and must be handled with care.
